2/26 Obelisk
(formerly listed
as base of former
7/11/66 market cross)
G.V. II
Obelisk, originally the market cross. 1859 obelisk stands on
an C18 pedestal. The pedestal is rusticated, has a base and
a moulded cap and was heavily restored in 1986. The tapering
square shaft has sunk panels in each face. The whole bears a
marked resemblance to a similar obelisk in Atherton (q.v.).
A fair in the market place was referred to in 1581, and a
proclamation from the market cross steps in 1649. The
original market cross stood until c.1800. J. Lunn, Leigh.
