ST JOHN'S ROAD 1. 5104 Sparkhill B11 Church of St John The Evangelist SP 08 SE 12/47 II 2. 1888 by Martin and Chamberlain. An unusual church for its plan providing a vast undivided low church preaching space. Red brick with terracotta dressings. Slender buttressed west tower. The spire added 1905. Low buttressed proto-aisles. Lancets and plate tracery. Pentice west porch abutting the tower. Internally the broad transepts and shallow polygonal chancel are thrown into one space with intersecting pierced iron truse-arches rising from low clustered shafts spanning nave and crossing.
