SANDWELL MB BIRMINGHAM CANAL SO 99 SE Birmingham Level, Tipton 4/3 The Boat Gauging House, Tipton Canal Basin (off 12.6.74 Factory Road) GV II Canal barge gauging house, now factory. 1873. Brick, with alternate courses of red stretchers and blue headers, and hipped slate roof. Facing the canal are eight windows with chamfered blue brick surrounds and round heads. Adjoining to the left is a lean-to which has a blocked doorway with segmental head. The right hand return wall has two blocked round-headed boat entrances, two small round-headed windows above, a plaque dated "1873" and a chimney. Originally contained gauging mechanisms used to assess canal tolls. This station dealt with two boats at a time and registered over 10,000 boats between 1873 and 1900.
