PARISH OF ILKESTON OFF AWSWORTH ROAD SK 44 SE 3/30 (North Side) 21.11.74 Bennerley Viaduct II* Railway viaduct, now disused. 1878-9 by Richard Johnson, made by Eastwood Swingler, for the Great Northern Railway. Brick and wrought iron. Approximately 500 yards long. Fifteen piers with brick abutments at each end. Each pier consists of ten iron columns with two centre rows of three columns, each flanked by two outer rows, each with two columns and with an additional column on each side forming an elliptical shape. The piers rise from shallow brick and stone bases. Diagonal and horizontal cross struts. Wrought iron lattice-girder deck. It is one of two remaining wrought iron lattice-girder bridges in the British Isles. See also Nottinghamshire, Broxtowe District, Civil Parish of Awsworth.
