SJ 3788ULLET ROADL1733/1249Unitarian Chapel

SJ 3788 ULLET ROAD L17 33/1249 Unitarian Chapel 14.3.75. G.V. I Chapel. 1898. T. and P. Worthington. Red brick with stone dressings and slate roof. In an elaborate late Gothic style. Nave and aisles narthex and organ loft, but aligned north-south. Nave of 7 bays with gabled buttresses and corner buttresses to west end. 3-light perpendicular windows to clerestory and small 2-light windows to aisles. Narthex of 3 bays with colonnetted splayed doorway and panel on parapet giving date. Bronze doors in Arts and Crafts style. Above this a large wheel window with carved angle and the apex. The gable is complicated by a feature resembling a bell-cote. Organ loft has cross gable and 5- light feature, 2 lights glazed. Small polygonal apse. Interior: Stone, nave has arcades on round columns and passage aisles. Shallow timber roof on corbelled wall piers. Chance has low walls forming pulpits and wooden choir stalls, those to south with canopies. Original light fittings, and stained glass windows by Burne-Jones. Vestry and Library to south have original panelling, fireplaces and bookcases. The vestry has a domical vault with painting by G. Moira, the library has vaulting ceiling with painting of the pursuite of Truth, also by G. Moira. Original light fittings. With the Church Hall (q.v.) this chapel forms one of the most elaborate Non-conformist ensembles in the country.
