House. 1723-1728 for James Brydges, Duke of Chandos. By
Benjamin Holloway or Fort and Shepherd, the Duke's London
surveyors. Flemish-bond brick with vertical joint to No.1 Bond
Street on the left (qv), painted stone architraves and
doorcase, double Roman tile roof continuous with No.1 Bond
Street. Double-depth plan. 3 storeys; 2-window range. Moulded
segmental arches to 6/6-pane sash windows to the second floor
which have thick glazing bars and some crown glass, the rest
have mid C19 two horizontal panes with margin panes to each
sash. The 6-panel door to the right has beaded edges to the
panels, a moulded wooden architrave and a hood on wrought-iron

The terraces of houses in Castle Street form an important
group, unusual for their scale and ambition outside London's
West End.
