Early C18. 2 storeys, attic and basement. Brick on projecting stone base, double
stepped. Chamfered stone quoins. Moulded stone cornice with carved brackets,
acanthus ornament. Hipped old tile roof swept out over cornice, 2 dormers with
heavy moulded cornice heads. 6 windows, with stone architrave surrounds and cills
on 1st floor. 5 similar windows on ground floor with additional curved frieze
and cornice to each. All with glazing bars intact. Large 8-panel double door,
off centre, in stone bolection surround, with curved frieze, moulded cornice and
broken pediment on carved stone brackets, acanthus ornament.
The door approached by a flight of 3 semi-circular stone steps from small terrace
across front of house. 2 wrot iron scroll pattern scrapers. 4 basement windows
in narrow areas. Area rails plain wrot iron, diagonal and rectangular pattern,
returned each side of door with bold strap scroll guards. The sides of house
have a deep coved cornice. Interior has fine plasterwork and panelling. Original
staircase.
Adjoining to right hand with yard in front: a stable block - late C18. Brick with
dentilled eaves and old tile roof. Pair of 3 central-arched stable doors (one
blocked) and central-arched door with radiating fanlight. 2 circular and central
oval loft windows over.
All the listed buildings on the South West Side, South East Side, Market Hall,
Market Cross and the Fountain form a group.
Also all the listed buildings on the South West Side form a group with Nos 1 to
18 (consec) Northgate Street.
