1. VICTORIA BRIDGE ROAD 823 Victoria Bridge (over River Avon) ST 7465 SW 13/885 ST 7464 NW 17/885 II* 2. 1836, by bridge-builders Motley and Dredge. Now used by pedestrians only. Span 120 ft. Gables slung from Bath stone towers, road deck joined to cables by flat-section iron rods slanting fanwise from centre of span. Unusual method of construction in that suspension rods are inclined from main cables, not vertical. Wrought-iron guard rails. Cast-iron plate fixed to North tower bears Royal Arms and raised lettering:- "Dredge, Patentee, Bath". This bridge is described as being "... of considerable importance in the history of civil engineering" (Industrial Archaeology of Southern England" by Kenneth Hudson).
