SHEFFIELD SK38NE CANAL WHARF 784-1/6/139 (South side) 30/04/74 Straddle Warehouse (Formerly Listed as: CANAL WHARF Bridge Warehouse) GV II Canal warehouse, now offices. c1900, restored 1994-5. Steel frame with concrete infill, blue brick underbuild and red brick end walls with 5 bay hipped slate roof. Corner pilasters and parapet. 5 storeys; 10 x 5 windows. Windows are cast-iron glazing bar casements, those to the ends with segmental heads. The building straddles the canal. East and west sides have regular fenestration with 10 windows on each floor. West side has a wooden footbridge on brackets. Below, 5 docking bays separated in the centre by blue brick walls with round-headed arches, and on each side by cross-braced round wrought-iron columns. Each end has a full width wooden canopy over the ground floor, and a central gabled wooden hoist canopy. Under the canopy, 5 round-headed arches with hoodmoulds. South-west corner has a full height square stair tower with 2 windows to the top floor and staggered windows to each landing below. North side has a door and landing to each floor. West side has a round-headed door to the ground floor. INTERIOR not inspected. This building is one of the last purpose built warehouses on a narrow canal, and is a highly specialised design.
