BURY ST EDMUNDS TL8564NE ABBEY PRECINCTS 639-1/8/111 Ruins to north of the Cloister 07/08/52 (Formerly Listed as: ABBEY PRECINCTS Abbey Ruins) GV I Remains of the Refectory, with the Kitchen and Cellarer's range to the north of it, and of the larder and wardrobe below the Queen's Chamber to the north of the former Dorter. Flint with stone fragments. C12. 3 of the Refectory walls are in coursed flint and stand approx 3 metres high; in the east and west walls are blocked pointed arched doorways of Barnack stone. The lower part of the Queen's Chamber building is the most complete of the whole complex, with all 4 walls standing. Stone-faced pilasters in the 4 corners and fragments of others along the walls which divided the interior into 2 vaulted bays. In the west wall the stone backing for a fireplace and in the north-west corner the base of a small circular stair turret. This building formed part of the range which included the Abbot's Palace. Scheduled Ancient Monument.
