How do you define your locality?

Scope in NC to choose from street, estate, village, district, town or region, according to project/age of pupils. Ask pupils what they regard as 'their community'.

  • to develop awareness of their built environment, sense of pride and involvement

Are there any listed buildings? What can they tell you about the area? How are they being used and what condition are they in?

Search the Images of England site to identify, check the Buildings at Risk register for those that appear to have problems. Visit them and ask pupils for memories and ideas for future.

Which buildings were/are important to a/the community? Is there a parish church or other faith building?

Walk round area, identify buildings, pupils to choose one to research, or all visit parish church to obtain history and look at graves/memorials. Make a town/village trail or tourist leaflet

Tracing the history of a building

What are/were the main sources of employment?

Research in trade directories, official town guides, employment commissions. Make a chart/map to record information at key dates.

Research using aerial photographs, building plans, maps. Annotate a modern map using a key to show main periods and areas of development.

When did people move into the area, why and where from? What effects did this have?

Research census 1841 - 1901, school admission registers, old newspspers. Make a timeline.

Have any famous/ influential people lived there? What evidence is there today?

Look for memorials, blue plaques etc. Contact local history society. Visit local web site. Produce a leaflet for the local tourist information office or website.

When was education first provided and by whom? Who benefited? Compare to modern provision.

Research trade directories, school records, parish histories. Compare on a chart.

How and why have people in the locality communicated/traveled within the area and outside?

Research maps, trade directories, official guides, records of turnpike trusts, canal companies etc. Produce a diagram with your community at the centre.

What were living conditions like in the area in the Victorian period/1930s etc.?

Research census for family sizes [Victorians only], health reports, parish registers for burial records, school log books for epidemics. Present information in a report.

How has land use changed from the nineteenth century to the present?

OS maps, tithe map, aerial photographs, estate maps, sale catalogues. Produce a series of annotated sketch maps, present in a power point presentation.

What was it like to live here in the past, what is it like now and how would you/other people like it to be in the future?

Investigate oral history, recorded for the project or from the local history society or local archives/local studies library. Write a script for a local radio station feature.
