2.
1919. Sir Edwin Lutyens architect. A cenotaph of Portland stone with flanking
piers crowned by pine cones. The pedestal of the cenotaph has a die carved
with names. The die has moulded cap and base and stands on a plinth. The
top of the cenotaph is carved with coat-of-arms and flanking lions. The whole
is surmounted by a stone sarcophagus with a draped recumbent figure on top
of it. The whitehall cenotaph is supposed to have been modelled on the Southampton
cenotaph.
