ELSTRONWICK MILL LANE TA 23 SW (west side) 7/44 Lelley Windmill II The description shall be amended to read: Corn windmill, tower type, built 1790 for Peter Sumpner, Miller, and later raised. Tower of tarred brickwork, timber-framed cap. Circular plan battered tower East Yorkshire mill, six storeys and cap. Bottom storey has two multi-paned Yorkshire sliding windows, one doorway and one blocked opening. Second storey has two windows as before and iron belt pulley. Third storey has two windows as before, and two doorways for access to the former stage, now missing, at second floor level. Fourth storey has four windows as before, fifth and sixth storeys each have two windows as before. The cap roof (formerly ogee) is missing, but the base frame of timbers carries the cast-iron windshaft and the cross for mounting the sails. Bottom storey has one pair of millstones complete with tun, hopper, horse, shoe and damsel, set up for belt drive from a vertical iron shaft. Second storey has vertical iron shaft with bevel gears to a horizontal shaft which passes through the wall. Pulley on horizontal shaft drives a flour dressing machine, and a pulley on the vertical shaft drives a further dressing machine. Tentering gear and governor for one pair of millstones, belt-driven from vertical shaft, spout. Third storey has one pair of millstones, complete with tun, hopper, horse, shoe and damsel. Two sets of tentering gear for millstones above and one governor, spouts, vertical shaft passes through. Fourth storey have two pairs of mill- stones, complete with tuns, hoppers, horses, shoes and quants with iron-mortise stone nuts. Iron upright shaft carries clasp-arm wooden great spur wheel with iron teeth. Belt pulley drives governor spindle passing through floor. Vertical shaft from below carries iron-mortise nut engaging spur wheel, and another nut drives a vertical shaft rising through ceiling. Fifth storey has bins, main upright shaft and vertical drive shaft. Sixth storey has upright shaft with cast-iron wallower, sack hoist friction-driven below. Vertical shaft and grain cleaner. Cap frame in place, carrying iron windshaft and remnants of winding and striking gear, but breakwheel destroyed and cap open to the elements. ------------------------------------ ELSTRONWICK MILL LANE TA 23 SW (west side) 7/44 Lelley Windmill II Windmill. Early C19. Orange brick, tarred. Five storeys with door and openings under segmental arches. Machinery survives: no cap or sails. Disused and derelict at time of re-survey.
