ATHERTONCHANTERS AVENUESD 60 SE(west side)2/5Chanters Farmhouse15/7/66

ATHERTON CHANTERS AVENUE SD 60 SE (west side) 2/5 Chanters Farmhouse 15/7/66 II* House. "WA 1678" (William Atherton) on door lintel. Hammer- dressed stone with graduated stone slate roof. T-shaped baffle-entry plan with 2 storeys (3-storey crosswing) and a 2-storey porch. Quoins. Bay 1 projects as a gabled crosswing having 5-light double-chamfered ovolo-moulded stone mullion windows with hoodmoulds on each of 3 floors. One of the quoin stones is inscribed 17 PCM 23, perhaps recording the date when the top storey was added to the crosswing. Bay 2 has 2 similar windows and bay 3 a porch with coped gable and kneelers. Both inner and outer doorways have heavy ovolo- moulded timber jambs and the original studded door survives. 3-light mullion window to first floor of porch and an oculus within the gable. 1, 2 and 4-light windows to left return. 4 arched and 2 circular lights to right return. Rear is rendered and has small C20 addition. Brick gable chimney stack. Interior: the house-part has a large inglenook fireplace with ovolo-moulded bressumer beam. Similarly moulded floor beams were shortened when a staircase was inserted. The principal first floor rooms also have ovolo- moulded beams. Built-in panelled oak cupboards. Several original doors. The house is a fine and largely unaltered example of C17 domestic architecture.
