TYLDESLEY CHURCH ROAD SD 60 SE (north-west side) 2/44 Astley Vicarage 18/7/66 G.V. II* Vicarage. 1704. English garden wall bond brick with C20 tile roof. Double-depth central-staircase plan with 5 bays and 3 storeys. Twin-gabled front elevation has central 4-panel door with eared and pedimented doorcase and 4-pane overlight. Symmetrically placed windows : 4 flush sashes on the ground floor (with glazing bars in the upper sash only), 5 possibly original cross casements on the first floor and four 2-pane casements on the second. All windows have flat brick arches. Round windows in gables and an elaborate rainwater head. The side elevations each have a gable with similar round window as well as a projecting chimney stack with tall paired shafts, cross casement windows (as above) and 2 and 3-light recessed chamfered mullion windows to upper floors. 2-storey lean-to addition to rear. Interior: ovolo-moulded floor beams in all the principal ground and first floor rooms. Dogleg stair with deep handrail, closed string, bulbous turned balusters and square newels with clips. Original panelled and boarded doors throughout. The house is a particularly early attempt at classicism which has been little altered since it was built. The combination of classical and vernacular elements adds to the building's interest.
