Enclosing wall with gatehouse. Circa 1570. Flint with ashlar dressings.
Encloses Hall complex on north, east and south sides. Flint wall with brick
coping tiles. At corners are octagonal ashlar piers with octagonal turrets
rising to crested finials. In centre of north-east return a C16 gatehouse.
Polygonal piers enclose 4-centred arch, moulded and within square surround
with hoods on labels. Spandrels are carved with encircled quatrefoils and
cusped mouchettes. String course below plain parapet. Polygonal piers with
ball finials, finial to south side missing. Interior arch of gatehouse similar
except the spandrels contain coats of arms. From interior a subsidary wall
runs to south-east corner of house enclosing garden. Similar subsidary wall
runs from north-west corner of house to north return of main wall and is
pierced by doorway into garden. Doorway in form of rectangular pedestrian
opening below concave pediment. In centre raised relief carved with heraldic
devices and swags. Jambs decorated with carved heads set within oval broken
surround. At base of jambs carved grotesque heads on pedestals.
