Country house. 1828-43 by John Dobson. Ashlar with Welsh slate and lead roofs.
2 storeys plus attic. A large irregular Tudor-style building. Garden front of
3 broad bays. Slightly projecting centre bay framed by octagonal turrets has
2-storey canted and embattled bay window under a shaped gable with heraldic
shield, flanking obelisk finials and an octagonal chimney at apex. Next are
recessed ½-bays with 2-light windows then full bays with 5-light windows on
ground floor, 2-light windows under hoodmoulds on first floor under shaped gables.
To right a recessed single-storey wing, with 5 tall, one-light windows and a
conservatory with central gabled porch. Entrance side, also 3 bays, has an
embattled porte-cochere with octagonal turrets, a recessed bay with 5-light
mullion-and-transom window and a projecting bay with an embattled canted oriel.
To left a long, recessed service wing with 2-light windows, hoodmoulds on ground
floor. All main bays in house break forward from wall face, have shaped gables
over and friezes of quatrefoils with Tudor roses above ground floor. Friezes
linked by continuous bands. Most of house has parapet with blind castellation.
Many tall, corniced, diagonally-set chimneys.
Interior has a Gothic style decoration: Dining room has coffered ceiling, fireplace,
panelled dado with built-in sideboard. Library has panels with Decorated tracery,
and panelled Tudor ceiling. Ballroom is in 2 parts. Both have coffered ceilings
with pendants, also friezes and fireplaces, one marble the other wood and classical
with triple Corinthian colonettes. Cast iron Gothic staircase with moulded wood
handrail.
