Country house. 1668 by Robert Trollope. Wings added for Sir Edward Swinburne
who died in 1786. North front added late C18 by William Newton for Sir John
Swinburne. Ashlar with Lakeland slate roof.
South front: Baroque. 2 storeys and basements, 5 bays. Divided by giant
pilasters with rusticated bases, intermittent banded rustication to ground floor,
and bulgy rustication above. Semicircular steps up to central door in elaborate
surround; Corinthian columns carved with vine leaves, and bases with relief
carvings of a beggar and a knight; scrolled pediment holding Swinburne coat of
arms. 2-light mullioned windows with raised rounded surrounds carved with leaf
garlands. Above outer ground-floor windows are dated sundials in frames of
dogtooth. Above inner ground floor windows are carved flower vases. The dentil
cornice is a replacement by Newton. Hipped roof with corniced ridge stacks.
Similar detail on returns. East side has central doorway with surround of thick,
naturalistic fruit and leaf carving; elaborate crest above. Recessed lower 5-bay
wing has 12-pane sashes with projecting keystones. Ramped walls c. 20 yards
long run south from ends of wings; wall to west has C17 doorway with scrolled
pediment.
North side: Classical style. 7-bay main block with 3-bay pedimented centre.
Half-glazed door in open Tuscan porch. 12-pane sashes in architraves. Oeil-de-
boeuf window in pediment. Lower L-plan 3-bay wings, with 6-bay inner returns
enclosing forecourt, have 12-pane sashes in plain reveals with keystones.
Interior: Hall has restrained mid C18 plaster ceiling, fielded panelling and
Palladian doorcases. Similar ceiling in ground floor south-east room.
