CALGARTH 1. 1834 Calgarth Hall SD 39 NE 7/55 8.5.50. I 2. Dates from early C16 onwards, and was the seat of the Philipson family from early C15 to 1717. Lime-washed stone rubble, old slate roofs, 2 storeys. East front is long and low; the centre portion has a boarded door, 2 windows on ground floor and 3 above (one small-paned sliding sash, 2 16-paned sashes); wing to left (south) contains former barns etc with remains of a corbelled projecting chimney; higher gabled wing to north, and a lower gabled wing on tile east end of it, with a small lean-to porch in the angle with a mediaeval pointed arched doorway and studded door, On the south end a range of stables adjoin the barn wing. On the north end of the larger wing is a kitchen with large projecting chimney with offsets and an oven at the base. The west front shows stone mullioned and transomed windows with chamfers and labels in north wing, and otherwise 16-paned sashes. Interior said to be important with plaster ornament of C16 and C17.
