SJ 48 SW SPEKE ROAD 393/10/1179 Liverpool Airport Hangar 1 19.06.85 GV II* Hangar. 1937. Sir A.J. Cobham with Sir J. Burnet and Partners. Steel construction with brick cladding. Large folding hangar doors between brick piers with blue brick angle pilasters and caps. Stone reliefs of eagles to caps. Clerestory has windows of 8 lights stepped downwards with central window, the glazing bars of which form airship motif. Returns have lean-to aisles with bands of windows, continuous clerestory windows. Gabled projection to left return. Originally intended for seaplanes. Among the earliest surviving examples of air transport buildings in the UK. P. Rees, A Guide to Merseyside's Industrial Past. 1984 P19.
