SJ 3490 SW WATER STREET (north side) L2 52/1336 Nos. 14 and 16 (Oriel Chambers) (formerly listed 12.7.66 as Oriel Chambers) G.V. I Includes Oriel Close. Office building, 1864. P. Ellis. 4 storeys with basement,7 bays,and 12 bays to Covent Garden. Cast iron frame with stone cladding. Shafts rise from ground floor and end in pinnacles projecting above parapet. Tall openings with nailhead moulding and shafts contain 3 canted oriels with stone bases and iron glazed windows tripartite windows with canted heads above. 5th bay has entrance with stone plaque and octagonal window above. Label-moulded parapet and 3-bay central shaped gable with Jacobean finial. Gable contains date panel, octagonal window and arms above Covent Garden facade similarly treated. Entrance in 1st bay to Oriel Close. Rear elevation has continuous oriels to storeys, cantilevered out from frame and canted at top and bottom. A pioneering building in the use of expressed cast iron construction.
