STANHOPE EAST BLACKDENE
NY 83 NE and NY 8738
18/175 and 36/175 Island House
GV II
Defensible house, probably early C17. Thick, battered rubble walls, now
rendered; stone-flagged roof. 3 storeys, 2 bays, wide proportions. Ground
floor, originally a stable/byre, now has central door in plain stone surround.
16-pane sash at left and another above it. Other windows C20 pivoted casements,
all with stone lintels and sills. End chimneys. On right return a similar
door and steps to a first-floor doorway, now holding C20 door. To left of this
doorway a curved bread-oven projects. Small modern windows, one in old fire-
window opening.
C20 pent rear extension is not of interest.
