ATWORTH GREAT CHALFIELD
ST 86 SE
(east side)
4/60 Walls on south side of moat in
front of Manor and Church of
All Saints
GV II
Walls with bastions, formerly enclosing manor house. Probably C13
or C14. Rubble stone, partly rebuilt with saddle back stone
coping. Semi-circular bastion to north east of church with
arrowloops on outer face, inner side facing churchyard has 2-light
mullioned window. Probably represents the defences of the manor
house on this site prior to Thomas Tropnell's rebuilding 1465-1480;
may have been converted to a summer house during post Medieval
period. The footings of a second bastion survive to the west.
