Rebuilt in 1328 on the site of a Norman motte and bailey. To north-west starts
keep on the motte, largely demolished but with ruins of fine masonry. This
is connected by an archer causeway to a barbican built on a rocky outcroft
which rises from an inner ditch around the motte, To south-east an inner bailey
is surrounded by remains of buildings forming a shell keep. The Castle became
Crown Property in mid C14. AM.
