1. RALPH ALLEN'S DRIVE 823 Middle Gateway, Gate and Retaining wall to east 4/862A II 2. c. 1730-40, repaired mid C19. The middle gateway was part of Ralph Allen's pleasure grounds for Prior Park (shown on the mid C18 estate map). The gate was restored probably by Bishop Baines 100 years later. The gate piers are of random construction in vermiculated 'sponge' stone, the east pier lacks its upper part. The gate has been reset and restored: wooden with diagonal cill and ramped upper rail. The wall to west is part of the estate boundary wall which has been repaired and is not of special interest. The wall to east forms part of an immense retaining wall salient in squared rubble which hangs above the Prior Park Lakes, and is part of an angled 'lay by' to the middle gateway; about 10 feet by 70 and about 12-15 feet high on a steeply sloping bank. The gates ate approached from the south by a heavily retained causeway. The Middle Lodge (q.v.) item served this gate. Important as part of an C18 estate lay-out for pleasure grounds in the wild manner.
