adjoining barns
G.V. II*
Large house of 2 main builds with later alterations and additions. Late C14/
early C15 south wing is constructed of large sandstone blocks with quoins; main
hall block was rebuilt in late C17 using coursed, squared rubble. Both have
graduated slate roofs (steeply pitched over wing) with stone chimneys. 3-storey
wing has a number of C14/C15 mullioned windows, some of which retain their
traceried heads, under hoodmoulds with labels; ground floor windows mainly C20
replacements. Internally, original large ground floor fireplace has been
uncovered; 1st floor room has fragmentary scrollwork plaster frieze and
decorative corbels. Door to 2-storey, 4-bay main block has late C17 pedimented
architrave with projecting keystone; single window to left, 2 to right and 4 to
1st floor, all mullioned 2-lights, variously glazed. Single-storey kitchen
outshut to rear has inserted C20 dormers. 2-storey range of outbuildings
adjoining north end is of 2 builds, both coursed, squared rubble; remains of
earlier north wing, incorporating C17 windows, under graduated slate roof has
barn attached under graduated stone flagged roof with loft doors and large wagon
doors. For further details see description in R.C.H.M.
