SD 59 NW KENDAL GILTHWAITERIGG LANE (East side) 1/30 Gilthwaiterigg II* House. Early C16 with later additions and alterations. Slobbered rubble with quoins, partly wet-dashed. Graduated slate roofs with outshuts added to rear; ball finials to gables. Large, original, stepped, rendered chimney to right of centre; other end chimneys. 2 gabled dormers. Hall with cross-wings; 2 storeys, 5 bays overall (1:3:1). Gabled central porch has squirrel finial; door on west side. Part-glazed door and window to left, 2 windows to right, all under continuous hoodmould; segment-headed dormer windows. All Hall windows C19 casements. Single stone-mullioned window, with 2 trefoil-headed lights under hoodmould with labels, to each floor in both wings; windows in west wing blocked by internal flue. C19/C20 fenestration to west return. Interior: Ground floor passage at rear retains original chamfered, pointed wooden arch at west end with curved stone stair to right. Wide C18 stair, with half-landing, leads from front left of Hall to 1st floor passage under eaves at rear: Closed string, turned balusters, square newels, and moulded handrail. West wing has shaped, chamfered, brackets to trusses. Hall trusses have chamfered rafters and king posts; tie-beams and lower sections of king posts lost, some original lath and plaster partitions. Plan-form and details are related to Castle Dairy (Wildman St) owned by Parr family.
