BECONTREE AVENUE 1. 5003 Becontree Valence House TQ 48 NE 3/1 28.6.54 II* 2. C17, but possibly partly of earlier date. There has been a house on this moated site certainly since the C13. L-shaped. Two storeys, timber framed and plastered, colourwashed. Three windows to left hand wing, 4 windows to right. Various C19 casements and C18 and C19 sashes. Two old gabled dormers to left hand block with 3-light windows and cornices. Old tile roofs. Slightly taller portion to right hand of right hand wing with steep pitched hipped tile roof. Further extension to right hand, circa 1920 similar general style, but with a flat roof. Other elevations of similar character, various windows. Interior has a good painted panelled room on ground floor occupying the eastern end of the old part of the house. The panels are small with raised mitred mouldings to the edges and are probably early C17. The fireplace has a late Stuart marble fireplace surround with a boloction moulded panel over. The well staircase is of late C17 date with turned balusters. There is a further panelled room, in oak, on the first floor. In the C14 it was the property of Aymer de Valence and his sister.
