Learning Zone

Authorities have kept lists of people and property, in order to levy taxes or rates, from the time of the Hearth Tax in 1662. From 1833 records were kept of people who qualified to vote.

• To trace the history of buildings and to find out who owned them or lived in them.
• To study the history of the franchise or how local authorities are run for citizenship.
